Hi Everyone: Hope you are all well and getting ready for Thanksgiving, boy, where does the time go!!?? Today's email was not planned, I wasn't even on one of my photo visits, as a matter of fact, I was doing a "dry run" for a tour of our Town that I will be conducting for Allamuchy Township's Elementary School tomorrow. I was marking down distances, times and making notes about what interesting sites and pointers to present during the tour. I had already made up an itinerary and forwarded same to the teachers (see attachment), but I just wanted to fine tune it so the students would not only learn about their Town, but they would have an enjoyable time learning about their Town! Who knows, if I do a good enough job, maybe I'll inspire one of the students to give their own tour for their family!! .jpg)
During my tours, if possible, I like to point out a site in the distance and mention that we will be at that site later and we will then look back at where we are presently, even if you can't get to all the sites it still keeps them focused on points of interest and places worthwhile to visit at a later date. So, getting back to this e-mails title, here I am, driving down Alphano Rd. approaching our Town Hall and looking West over the farm fields when I catch a glimpse of a black & white object in one of the trees at the edge of the field. What is that? I couldn't get a clear view because of the tree line along the road, so I turned around to park and investigate. I can't tell you how many times I have done this resulting in nothing and once in a while bringing on a good laugh, BUT when it pays off - it pays off!! (I am so thankful I was born curious and willing to go out of my way to look at stuff!!!!)
I was looking at an adult Bald Eagle, they don't develop their classic white heads and tails until they mature AND he was in a perfect position to see, sitting on a limb over the field. He sat there for quite a while giving me time to enter the field beyond the trees and brush to get a clear photo. I started to walk towards him to get a better photo and he took off. Charlie says, "Yes, It was pure luck that I happened to be in that area, but the sighting was 'luck' that I created by always looking around for things that don't quite look familiar and if need be, take some action and check it out!! I know this is one of my more repetitive themes but folks it has worked for me and will work for anyone else on their trips - TRUST ME!"

This sighting was especially rewarding and exciting, because, last Thursday while at the Villa along the North Shore of Allamuchy Pond an adult Bald Eagle flew overhead coming over the pond and then flying West. There have been about four sightings at Allamuchy Pond, I am excited that this eagle felt comfortable enough to perch overlooking farm fields maybe he will take up residence in our area! You and your families have a great Thanksgiving!! Charlie Fineran Director of Open Space Allamuchy Township Environmental Commission Allamuchy Historical Society - President
